Scott A. Lukas is Faculty Chair of Teaching and Learning (a unique position focused on pedagogical development, workshop creation, and audio-visual/Web documentation) at Lake Tahoe Community College, where he has previously taught Anthropology and Sociology. He was Visiting Professor of American Studies at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and taught Anthropology and Sociology at Valparaiso University.

The un/making of La Oroya, Peru into one of the World’s Most Polluted PlacesAt the turn of the 21st Century, the smelting city of La Oroya, Peru became one of the world's most polluted places. Its potent levels of heavy metals like lead, cadmium, and arsenic drew the attention of international NGOs like the Black Smith Institute, which sought to make the city into a toxic place of global ill repute. Many denizens of La Oroya did not appreciate this newfound international infamy and fought back to defend their revered city, the so-called metallurgic capital of Peru.

Sacred Toxic: Narratives of Visible and Invisible Toxicities of Godavari River

Focusing on the constant (re)configurations of the water flowing in the Godavari River in Nashik city, India, in my research, I explore how at specific instances the alterations become visible to the populations and is acted upon. The narratives of river water configurations, in Nashik, discusses about pollution and sources of pollution.
