This is an image taken by Angela Okune on January 30, 2019 at the Kenya National Archives of "Index to the Archives". The index was written in 1984 by Musila Musembi who was the Chief Archivist at the time. There is a section on "Theses, Dissertations, and Research Reports." Most of the publications included fall between the period of 1952 - 1980. Topics include housing preferences and policy in Kibera, tax reform, baboons, urbanism in East Africa, banking, Franz Fanon, and reflections on the National Archive. This artifact represents (some of the) point of my project as the image highlights 1) the sheer volume and diversity of research work done historically and also at present on Kenya; 2) the inadequacy of depth/management of the source material (not to mention even the outputs from analysis) and the challenges of continuing to build on research work that is conducted in the country (due to disciplinary silos, inadequate technical systems of sharing, differing incentive structures, etc.).
