The Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum in Cologne hosts a collection of photographs that were produced and circulated for colonial propaganda in the homeland of the colonizers. Parts of the collection has been put together for the German journal “Kolonie und Heimat”, a journal founded by a women’s group after 1907, at the time of the genocidal war in Namibia and subsequently circulated in various German journals.

In the frame of the exhibition “Resist! – the art of Resistance” at the RJM (not opened yet due to Corona restrictions) the question arose of how to find images of anticolonial resistance within this colonial archive. Or rather, is it possible to trace resistance or subversion in images of suppression?
