I took the second photo in April 2016. It was also in Santa Helena. It was during the so-called ‘summer season’ when logging and burning of forests increases. FARC guerrillas highly restricted these activities during their political dominance in the region. I took this photo during a “spot task:” a clearing operation that eliminates single explosive threats in areas outside confirmed minefields. This image captures the entanglement of landmine presence and local burning practices. The latter is also one of the artisanal demining methods used by local communities to (de)activate landmines.
