Peaceful contact with the Waorani started in the late 1950’s, their contact was promoted by the Summer Institute of Linguistics who developed a process of evangelization. After the contact, the Waorani have embraced the use of biomedicine to treat ailments that were unknown for them.

This picture was taken in the house of a young Waorani family, it shows a traditional Waorani crown over a Bible, and in the front a bottle of syrup. The Waorani consider that their bodies are becoming weaker after the contact due to their exposure to what they identify as "chemicals", which they perceive coming from biomedicine, processed food, and oil-related pollution.
