Knowledge Economy Incarnate: Gentrification in a New York City Neighborhood

Submitted by IsabelleSoifer on
Description

Columbia University implemented urban renewal and order maintenance to coerce residents of the neighbourhood deemed not to fit within their vision of a “Modern Acropolis” and the knowledge economy. I argue that police raids and the use of eminent domain rendered low-income residents of colour silenced and marginalized. However, residents worked their way through the structures of dominance to assert their right to remain in the neighbourhood.Cite as: Soifer, Isabelle. 2019. “Knowledge Economy Incarnate" In Research Program Description, a class project for “Ethnographic Methods,” Anthropology 215a University of California Irvine, Fall 2019. http://centerforethnography.org/content/knowledge-economy-incarnate-gentrification-new-york-city-neighborhood.
