X10 Enters the Home

Text

Developed in 1975, the X10 was the first electronic home automation protocol - a way for devices to talk to one another.  It allowed for remote control of various devices, as well as automation of appliances such as lighting. For a paper discussing use of the X10 to comply with Sabbath Day obligations, see Woodruff, Augustin, & Foucault, 2007.Woodruff, Allison, Sally Augustin, and Brooke Foucault. 2007. “Sabbath Day Home Automation: ‘It’s Like Mixing Technology and Religion.’” In Proceedings of the SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 527–536.
