Workshop Script for "Sighting Signal Hill"

<p>This workshop script borrows PECE's philosophy of using a loose structure as a matrix for ethnographic collaboration. The readings, map, prompts, and questions are designed to "stage encounters" (Fortun 2015) among the Field Works participants and the Signal Hill field site, while leaving the outcomes of these encounters indeterminate.&nbsp;</p><p>The suggested readings (Cumming 2018, Pulido 2000) help to situate these encounters geographically, historically, and theoretically. The&nbsp;<em>Atlantic</em> photo essay (Taylor 2014) provides both ethnographic context and methodological and aesthetic inspiration.</p><p>This workshop is also inspired by the Center for Ethnography's 2018-2019 theme of Visualization in Ethnography. The <span>"Field Sights"&nbsp;</span>prompts encourage participants to visualize their objects of study and use visual data as the basis for collaborative inquiry and analysis. Workshop participants generated photographs and sketches to render, archive, and share ethnographic data in and about Signal Hill.</p><p><span>The "Insights" prompts, designed for reflection on the ethnographers' visualizations, also mirror the structured analytic for annotating the images in the "Sighting Signal Hill" PECE essay.</span></p>
